Kitchen layout: Should I put lower cabinets, or pot drawers?

I'm designing the kitchen in my new build. It will essentially look like the one in the attached photo, but without that silly wine rack.

I'm trying to decide if I should put cabinets on at the bottom, or if I should just have all drawers. There will be a lot of cabinet space at the top, so I'm not sure if I need much more at the bottom.

Edit: There will be a full pantry as well (the door on the side). The island will have a dishwasher, a set of cabinet doors below the sink, and the garbage/recycling beside that.

What do you think?

We did all drawers except for two regular cabinets on each side of the oven for cookie sheets, cutting boards etc. So glad we spent the extra and did drawers. We did Ikea, so top notch hardware.

Definitely pot drawers. Pots rarely stack neatly so you'll need more than you think.

another one for drawers. our kitchen had drawers when we moved in and I love them. It's pretty much the only way you can keep a clear countertop and out put things away properly.

Drawers are more convenient for anything on the bottom as you don't need to crouch down and dig.

You can't have enough pots n pan drawers.

The extra they usually cost is well worth it.

We did the lowers of ours entirely with drawers. If you like the look of doors, you can do doors and then drawers inside.

The top drawer in all our banks is a split drawer (2 shallow drawers instead of one deeper one).

Well, looks like there's a clear winner here. I believe all the drawer options include two smaller drawers at the top, and two deep pot drawers below. I think I'll just do all drawers as you all suggested. Thanks, everyone!

You won't be sorry! Back saving and no lost items or stuff you don't use because digging it out is a pain!

Drawers > Door.

Like you said, you have more than enough cabinet door for the upper.

The only down side to drawer is they tend to be quite a bit more costly than door. Especially if you are going thru builder too (My builder charges $500 to change ONE lower cabinet from door to pot and pans drawers. To do all 10 lower cabinets, it would have costed $5000 in upgrade)
Granted it is not where need that cost if you are going aftermarket, but I think it still cost 30-40% more to get a base cabinet with drawer vs door (e.g. $250 vs $350 each)
But $100 each = only $1000 more if you have 10 lower cabinet.

I made my own drawers behind the doors of our kitchen as we were second owners. I even replaced the kick panel of our island with a massive drawer for cookie sheets etc. That was the best upgrade of all. That really got all the flat stuff out of the cabinets everywhere else and they are more neatly sorted (mostly)

The thing to watch with drawers is that they go all the way back. Lots of lowers are about 23" deep of useable space but I've seen pot/pan drawers at 18-20" which is a waste. The uppers in my kitchen are 18" with 3/4 extension slides. I have replaced a few of them as well, some with double decker drawers for utensils. My island is a custom job in a builder home with 25" of useable space inside so I built everything to fit correctly. A sheet of Baltic birch is $50ish bucks, slides are $8 a pair, some screws, some urethane (or paint as I did my parents and Aunts place) and its done.

The idea came from Family Handyman for me at an airport once and I customized their plans to maximize my space. Their tutorial has some waste.

We've got both drawers & doors with pullout drawers inside.

I prefer the drawers far more....one single movement as opposed to opening the door then having to yank out the pullout......first world problems I know.

I'm copying this idea. I hate trying to find the space to put those things!

This is my island and the rest of my kitchen. I went all out on drawers and love it!
