The First Time 2012 Funny Scenes
Proves that teen romances can be sweet and charming
"The First Time" is not just about having sex for the first time, but falling in love for the first time, and also just being yourself in front of the object of your affection for the first time. Aubrey (Britt Robertson) has a boyfriend (we'll get to him later) and Dave (Dylan O'Brien) is infatuated with a girl who will probably never like him for who he really is – she's just too into herself for that to ever happen.
At the beginning of the film, Aubrey and Dave meet, they're teenagers who go to different high schools, and their first night together reveals a natural attraction and an easy chemistry that allows them to just open up and talk about whatever they feel like saying. It's a fairly simple film, dialogue-heavy and follows their relationship as all teen romance films do, but there's something about it which suggests it's a genre we haven't really seen before.
"The First Time" isn't a comedy – it's a romantic drama. But it's not heavy and involved like a drama, it's light and funny like a comedy – but in a sweet, charming and real way. The only obvious attempt at comedy is with Aubrey's boyfriend Ronny (James Frecheville). Ronny is one or two years older, this, obviously, makes him wiser, more attuned to the ways of the world, and anybody who isn't him, or who hasn't gone to college, will just never understand the devastations that corporations cause. He likes Aubrey because she's different, she doesn't act all corporation-y.
We like Aubrey because she really isn't all that different. When she's with Dave, she's honest in a way that Dave needs. We like Dave because he convinces himself not to do something stupid, and then proceeds to do something stupid. Just like we all do. And that is why "The First Time" isn't as cheesy as it easily could be. It's a mature film in its depiction of teenagers; it works for adults just as well it does for its teen audience.
Writer and director Jon Kasdan (son of famous filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan) does a good job writing the main characters. The dialogue is a little unnatural at times, and some parts of the story are more drawn out than they need to be, but it's fairly easy to forgive that. The acting is surprisingly good, providing the film with the sweetness and charm that it needs. "The First Time" is a light romantic drama; easy to watch and enjoy, especially for fans of teen romantic comedies of any age.

Gets by on charm, character-charisma, and slick writing
The First Time seems like a film that would be as redundant and as vacuous as the title it boasts, when in retrospect, it's a rather complete film. A very surprising one at that. It's talky, moving at a slowburn pace, which is a blessing, especially in this genre, open to showing human characters function in a strange world, and deep in its focus on two characters that do more than meet-cute - they stay cute. They also make it easy to like them since they're sincere and just as confused as we were as they quickly wander out of adolescence before they even felt like they were in.
The film opens with Dave (Dylan O'Brien), a senior in high school, rehearsing lines in a back alley during a party that he plans to recite to Jane (Nickelodeon's Victoria Justice), a close friend he has big feelings for. He is overheard by Aubrey (Britt Robertson), a Junior in high school, who's friends are the party in the house next door. They have a nice, intimate discussion about relationships and crushes, and Aubrey even gives him some rather harsh constructive criticism on his letter, which she says is rambling and petty and isn't likely to sway her feelings at all. Despite this, Dave continues talking with her and they dance preciously in the alley until the party is raided by police.
They then decide to go to Aubrey's home, where they listen to vinyl, drink wine, and sleep together on the bed innocently enough, despite Aubrey making clear that she has a boyfriend. The next morning, Aubrey, in a freaked-out state-of-mind, forces Dave out the window, reminding herself not only that she has a boyfriend but pretty strict parents as well. This sets up a tone for the weekend.
What follows is Dave's attempts to connect with Aubrey, avoid her preachy and overly-clingy boyfriend Ronny (James Frecheville), and receive advice from his pals Simon (Craig Roberts) and "Big Corporation" (LaMarcus Tinker), all in the span of one weekend. It isn't hard to figure out where this will lead, as the title pretty much blatantly gives it away. This will be the first time both Dave and Aubrey have sex, which they discover isn't as exciting or as easy as they thought; one of the most charming additions to The First Time. The film never leaves the ground of reality, and even during the scenes of the party, never do we feel that director Jon Kasdan is attempting to perpetuate raunchiness between characters or force situations onto them. The dialog (also by Kasdan) remains controlled, yet so alert that you would think it's done in a form of improvisation.
The leads are especially likable, as well, giving the film an elevation in the character-department, which is what many teen comedy-dramas struggle to create. While these characters may be a bit too eclectic and distinctly-drawn for some audience members to connect with, they are nonetheless interesting and made likable by their innocent, judgments, and their chemistry. Dylan O'Brien and Britt Robertson do wonderful work as teens caught up in the mixed-signals and adolescent nature of relationships, crushes, and insecurities. Victoria Justice is a pleasant addition to the cast, but those looking for her as a character worth putting on the poster will be disappointed; she is allotted, maybe, ten minutes of the whole project. But in those ten minutes, she says a few things that give you the indication why this project wasn't backed by Nickelodeon. Regardless, I laud her for trying new territory; sign her up for a Harmony Korine project next.
There are different levels of teen films in 2013. They can excel to nearly unobtainable levels of masterworks like The Breakfast Club or The Perks of Being a Wallflower, steady their sights on competence and energy and be something like Drumline or Little Birds, or could go in the dumpster along with Girl in Progress and the wretched Project X. The First Time may be, at times, predictable, fluffy, and too eclectic for its own good, but it gets by on charm, character-charisma, and slick writing. Unfortunately, it's something that will unfortunately go predominately unseen by teenagers.
Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Britt Robertson, Craig Roberts, Joshua Malina, James Frecheville, Christine Taylor, and Victoria Justice. Directed by: Jon Kasdan.

Hodgeman to the rescue...lucky girl ..!!
Just when rom-coms got all boring and oh-so-predictable and we decided to write them off of our Sunday evenings, Jon Kasdan presented this cute, funny movie- the first time. Thank you!
Beautiful (literally) characters, witty dialogues, good background score and decent acting make this a great option for the rom-com genre fans. The movie did not leave me feeling all mushy and longing for romance...but it was definitely a feel good ride..it actually lifted my spirits :)
Try not to miss it.You will like it,if not love..but it's hard to dislike such a "from the heart" love story. Do watch it..it's not a waste of time..pure entertainment.

As good as a high school rom-com gets
I really liked The First Time. I don't feel the need to summarize what the movie is about, as the other reviews and the summary does that job, but I really enjoyed this movie. The writing for this movie really stood out to me, as the conversations felt so real between characters because of subtle little things that happen in most conversations in real life. That's a credit to the actors as well, but when you see the movie, especially the first time the main characters meet, you will understand what I mean.
It's a shame this film didn't get a bigger release in theaters because Dylan O'Brien and Britt Robertson are both terrific. They make the two characters blend so well together it's hard not to root for them to wind up together. The supporting cast does a great job as well, but this movie is all about Dave and Aubrey so there wasn't a large chunk of material for any of them.
The only thing I can suggest for this movie is don't go into it expecting to make you laugh hysterically. Don't get me wrong, it's a very funny movie, but it's more of the type that makes you smile, grin, or giggle. Can't go without mentioning the soundtrack either, its phenomenal and every song goes with its moment.
Overall, I highly recommend this movie. The only way I could see someone disliking the film is if they are not into rom-coms or high school movies, but if you are then why are you even watching it in the first place?

One of the Best Teen Love Films of Recent Times
I go back quite aways to A Summer Place and Parish, yet even as a senior citizen I found The First Time to be a refreshingly honest and well acted film highlighted by the performance of Britt Robertson, a young actress who unfortunately is in the shade of Jennifer Lawrence and Ellen Page...yet I hope she can find he way into the sun because she has a lot to offer.
The film, although light hearted, doesn't deal in mind numbing clichés. It is about the real emotions of modern high school kids, who you realize aren't that much different from the kids of my generation.
It's nice to see a film where kids actually fall deeply for each other rather than just fleeting sexual attraction.

Awesome
I thought this movie handled teenage romance, chemistry, nervousness, perhaps actual first time sex, really well. If it's truly the first time for both kids..it can be weird and confusing. I especially enjoyed the music and can't find a soundtrack. :( I thought the characters were original. The conversation between the 3 guys was not untypical of what I had with my buddies back in the day...long ago. The one scene where the guy yells back at them "what's wrong with you assholes..." wasn't really a necessary scene. It appeared the director just forgot to drop that on the floor. However, it would have been nice to have seen a little more interaction between Dave and Aubrey..like the theories he talked about and the discussions he was referring to. Still I'm 52 and I watched it with my teenagers and we all loved it.

Surprisingly decent
Here's me, thinking I'd have to go through this horrible movie just to see Victoria Justice in it but I was totally wrong. It was quite the opposite actually, I had to go through Victoria Justice so I can watch these interesting characters fall in love.
Yeah, it has its typical teenage moments; parties and stuff but it's a decent love story. Perhaps the movie is too much concentrated on the lead characters but it is forgivable since I enjoyed every moment of them discussing (their) life.
Both of the lead actors are beautiful, charismatic and especially the female lead, interesting personality. She doesn't believe in facebook and twitter and stuff, she wants the old-fashioned way, meeting a boy in a bar or perhaps a dark alley ;)

Different from other Teen movies
Great coming of age teen movie that explores the angst of the 'First Time'. Unlike most teen flicks, the characters don't fall into stereotypes, and they act their age in an intelligent way that does not lean towards Dawson Creek territory. Great from start to finish, and different from most movies in that genre. The teens are normal, the girl and boy you and I know, and now some picture perfect model. The cast were excellent in their roles in fact I have also watched the lead character in Teen Wolf and this is quite a departure from the role he plays in that. The best thing, however, about the movie is the romance was relate-able and normal, and not some unrealistic love story you only seen in movies. What a great ending!

She met Dave in the best day of her life!
It has been a long time since I watched such an awesome teen movie. I always want to find a movie which can represent our feeling when it comes to first love. And this movie is the ONE!
Aubrey is sexy and dependent, more mature than girls of her own age. Dave is smart but shy most of the time. Both of them are great people and when they meet each other, the chemical just burst. It is so hard to find someone you can just keep talking to. So when they are talking about dream, traveling, hobby, I can't help smiling because this is so real. Although some of our experience is way much personal, we just want to share our thoughts with the ONE for no reason.
This movie also reminds me of Flipped. Both of them are about first love. The most different part for me is that Julie in Flipped is brave while Aubrey is more vulnerable and sensitive. But at the end of the day, you'll have your own happy ending.
In addition, I used to check the ranking before I watch a movie. After watching this, ranking is of no importance any longer. This movie is just so real, so romantic and so awesome!!!

Great film
I really have so many to wrap up this film with such a great words. At the beginning I want to mention I am 16 year old boy and I definitely will watch it second time or even more.
Film was great from the first time and I really want to say thanks to the authors and actors. Britt Robertson played a great roll and she is so cute and wonderful through the hole film. From the beginning they were all at a party and they were in the back alley. Dylan O'Brien was practicing his speech for the girl she liked a lot from childhood. But when he met girl called Aubrey and she was struck away from her. I do not want to spoil but one thing I have to say is that it is great film to watch and it has a really good idea behind all this.
In conclusion I want to say that The First Time went really to my heart and it is really good movie. Actor work was brilliant and I hope that you love this film as much as I am.

What a great movie (The First Time)
Warning: Spoilers
I can summarize this movie with just one word : "Chemistry" The brillant job of Britt Robertson on this movie together with Dylan O'Brien was perfect. Some people will consider this movie as a cliche, but this is different, you will not find the same scenes and situation as you see in other movies.
In "The First Time" the dialogue is deep and intelligent, and the long scenes are totally proper for the story. During the first 20 minutes you will see only a talk between Aubrey (Britt Robertson) and Dave (Dylan O'Brien) but you will be involved on the story and will start to cheer for their relationship. And most of the said on the beggining of the movie, will happen after.
The soft sound track always start in the right time and the lyrics are related to the scene. The musics of this movie makes you remember the scenes when you listen to them.
The Photrography is amazing, during the romantic scenes the camera spin around the couple, followed by the soundtrack. In same scenes you have a close of the face of Aubrey, and you can her blue eyes.
Speaking about the characters: Aubrey is an insecure girl, full of fears to be alone, maybe this the reason why she date Ronny (his incomprehensible boyfriend), until she mets Dave. She likes to make a lot question, but when Dave make the same questions, she never answer. Dave, like his mother says, is confident or self-assured, and he is obsessed by his best friend Jane, but she doesn't think the same. You will realized turing the movie that Dave is persistent and will fight for Aubrey.
I recommend "The First Time"

not working
A way too perfect and therefore boring male lead, a pale female lead, a non existent plot (for the most part), pacing issues, not funny nor touching in any way. To sum it up: This film is not working as it was probably intended. The rating is far too high

"First Time" actually first feature for scion of film royalty...
Lets move quickly over the fact that Jon Kasdan is the son of Lawrence Kasdan, top-tier Hollywood film royalty with a list of credits that any film geek could recite even if in a coma. So for his "first" film (see the pun in the title?) we have high expectations. This story of young love, while a little uneven, is unforgettable, mainly as a result of the chemistry between the actors. There is no substitution for chemistry. An excellent script by Jon (whose father first attracted attention mainly as a writer) helps, but at the end of the reel its the performances that matter. Britt Robertson has a strong future ahead, she pulls a page from the Rachel McAdams handbook, and actually seems to glow in some shots. The film works, and works brilliantly, whenever the two leads are in frame. Trivia: Kasdan changes Robertson's makeup after the "event" in the film to emphasize the change. It's a cheesy trick but with an actor like Robertson to work it, he pulls it off anyway.

Refreshing and unique rom-com
I've seen a lot of rom-coms over the years, but 'The First Time' is unlike any other rom-com I've seen before. In fact, I'm not sure if I'd even class it as a rom-com, it's more of a romantic drama. The central component of the story is the romance between the two main characters, but there isn't much comedy and certainly no laugh out loud moments. There are quite a lot of emotional scenes and towards the end of the movie, I was shocked at how dark things got for what I initially thought to be a rom-com.
Don't get me wrong, this movie still has a lot of the same tropes you'd expect from any romantic movie - loner boy meets sweet girl, they hit it off, she has a dumb boyfriend, he has a crush on a popular girl that only sees him as a friend and sleeps around the the jocks, the main pair deny their feelings until they finally admit it, everything's happy, then the pair inevitably come up against an obstacle before finding their way back to each other. We've seen it all before and we know it off by heart, but there is still something very unique about 'The First Time'.
What makes 'The First Time' different than others of this genre is how realistic it is and its focus on the characters Dave (Dylan O'Brien) and Aubrey (Britt Robertson) and their relationship. Although there are other characters and the two main characters interact with those other characters, it's still completely focused on their budding romance. Dylan and Britt's chemistry sells the romance and despite a majority of the movie being focused solely on them, I was engrossed. There is something about the way in which the movie is structured and the scenes between the two characters of Dave and Aubrey that feels incredibly intimate and authentic. Their conversations are fully fleshed out and time is spent to really show the process of the two of them getting to know each other. In most movies, it usually feels like there's a rush to get to the next scene or plot point, but 'The First Time' was very character driven, which I enjoyed. The dialogue feels realistic and natural (although, at times is a little melodramatic) and wasn't saturated with romantic cliches. Dave and Aubrey's conversations were exactly the kind of conversations people have when they first meet and are getting to know each other.
What I most admire about 'The First Time' is that it wasn't afraid to show the rocky road most of us go down when we meet someone new. Although Dave and Aubrey have an initial attraction and chemistry when they meet, the path to them realising that isn't easy. Towards the end, I was convinced that the two of them wouldn't find their happy ending and go their separate ways, and I admired that the movie pushed the boundaries of their romance in that way. The main obstacle that stands in their way towards the end is realistic and poignant, and not shallow or constructed. How they feel and what they go through is incredibly relatable and it was refreshing to see a romance movie that isn't based solely upon fantasy. The relationship feels real and is a reflection of a lot of relationships (particularly first-time relationships) between young people.
In addition, the exploration of love was just as refreshing. Instead of throwing the word love around or having the characters tell each other (or us) that they loved each other, we got to see the process of them falling in love without a label being put on it. One of my favourite moments is when Dave admits that he has never felt about anyone the way he feels about Aubrey, and that he doesn't know what those feelings are or what they mean. Love is a complicated emotion, particularly when you're experiencing it for the first time and I liked that the movie portrayed that sense of uncertainty and confusion that both characters go through as their feelings for one another evolve.
Finally, I love that despite being young and inexperienced, Dave and Aubrey show maturity and resilience in the way they handle the hurdles they face and the message this movie sends to its audience (particularly its younger audience). Unlike most romantic movies, 'The First Time' doesn't provide anyone with unrealistic expectations of love. Dave and Aubrey's relationship is far from perfect, and the movie could have easily ended with them going their separate ways and never speaking again, and that's what makes this movie so unique. Its message is that no two people are ever perfect for one another, there's no straight or easy route to love/relationships and it's easy to walk away the first time you hit a snag in a relationship, but if you have a unique bond with someone it's worth fighting for and working on.
Overall, I enjoyed 'The First Time' and would recommend it to anyone that's a fan of romantic movies. Dylan and Britt are great, their chemistry is on point and the love story between Dave and Aubrey isn't contrived or overly cliche, but organic and realistic. For those looking for a light-hearted or funny rom-com, this won't be for you, since it is much more emotional than one would expect from a romantic movie. But even then, I still believe this movie is worth a watch if only to put a slight dent in the over-the-top and cliched romantic fantasies present in the romance genre.

a decent watch
The First Time is a coming-of-age rom-com about the mixed feelings that two teenagers experienced as they fall in love for the first time and eventually decide to lose their virginity together. The film aims to show the nervousness, hesitation, insecurity and excitement that every teenager would experience when they lose their virginity the first time, but it fails to capture the feelings perfectly.
Although the meetup and development of the relationship happens so fast that it feels a bit artificial, but the on-screen chemistry between the two leads is so convincing that you eventually believe that they developed a solid connection somewhere along the way. How the relationship develops between them is seemingly simple: they find each other easy to talk with, share their feelings without fear or distrust, walks her home, etc. It's sweet and charming. The film is dialogue-heavy but feels fresh and slightly different than typical American coming-of-age rom-com nowadays. We care about them and wish that they could have a happy ending.
However, when the long-awaited key moment of consummation arrives, it just cuts away and fade to black, leaving the audience to speculate or ponder what actually happened is a bit of a letdown. There's no compelling insights to be found and the film feels ordinary when the credits roll. Despite its shortcomings, it's still an enjoyable light romantic comedy film to watch.

Not just another teen movie!
Warning: Spoilers
This movie hearkens back to early John Hughes, back when Molly Ringwald was his muse. The dialogue shows that Jon Kasdan was paying attention when his dad was penning those excellent screenplays for Grand Canyon, The Big Chill and others. The direction is subtle, and the performances pitch perfect. Watching Dave and Aubrey fall quietly and quickly in love was both beautiful and amusing. Their obvious attraction to each other, or at least mutual interest is played out without fanfare in a wonderfully organic way. It was interesting to see Victoria Justice, obviously the "big" name in the cast play against type in her small but pivotal role. Kudos also to the part of Big Corporation. His character, while once again small, is essential. His physical presence, and the fact that he is silent in his first couple of scenes, makes his advice to Dave near the end all the more surprising. For me, he is one the lynch pins for the movie. Now as to Aubrey and Dave. WOW! Watching the actors inhabit these characters and avoid the clichés and stereotypes that could have easily have made this just another sex farce was wonderful to behold. I also admit that Dave reminds me of myself 40 years ago. A good guy, possibly carrying the torch for the wrong girl but being so obviously sweet and caring that Aubrey was able to see it, even without wanting to. Spoiler: the seduction scene is wonderfully poignant and funny and, most importantly, true to life. The truth is, rarely is the first time smooth going, much less rapturous. All in all, a very good movie that I would recommend to anyone, especially teens as they approach that fantastic and torturous time of their lives called high school.

Almost unwatchable
I really only write a review if a movie sticks out in a good or bad way. This one definitely is the latter. I am shocked by the other reviews. First of all the story is so contrived. We get all these little "false" setbacks that feel so unnatural. Speaking of unnatural, let's talk about the actors. Britt Robertson: The best I can give her is that she has some cute moments and I at least buy her insecurity at times. But a lot of the time she is just babbling the by the way mostly horrible dialog. I guess this delivering of dialogue as fast as you possibly can without any pauses or room to breathe is supposed to be a style because I have seen it before but it is just bad style. How am I supposed to actually feel what the actors feel if they don't even get the time to feel it because they have to say 300 words in 20 seconds. Dylan O'Brien and I am sure he is trying but he is just so bad. Him attempting to play the shy, award insecure guy is cringe worthy too watch. Just compare it to early Jesse Eisenberg performances or Michael Cera and the lists goes on. There is not one true moment with him he is just trying to play something he doesn't know how to. And if you see the both kissing any romance is gone anyway. Only good actor in this movie is Craig Roberts and guess what he went on to do good stuff.
To sum it up. The actors are not good, the script isn't and the dialog is neither. This was almost unwatchable.

Not your average high school rom-com.
Well where do i start.I just discovered this movie and it immediately became one of my favorites. Obviously not the best i have seen but maybe my favorite in terms of the feelings and thoughts it generated. At the moment i am 35 years old and male so I watched this movie from a more mature point of view.
The plot is not something extraordinary (girl meets boy there is an instant attraction and so on) but the real focus are the two characters Britt and Dave and their dialogues. It is not a story of the popular student who falls in love with the nerd or anything so cliche. Both characters are just normal people who dream of the future and of love. A random meeting in a back alley is enough to spark their interest.Although they already have love interests (Aubrey is dating someone and Dave is in love with his friend Jane) when they meet they immediately start falling for each other.
And this is where the REAL difference of this story is.Nothing really extraordinary or exciting happens. They just talk. But it's the way they talk. They way the get to know each other. The way they want to hear about the others dreams and what makes them happy. The awkward facial expressions and the stopping in the middle of a sentence or changing their mind and saying something different. It feels like a real conversation and not scripted and memorized. They are after all supposed to be high school students, they are supposed to lose their words sometimes, or regret or feel embarrassed and awkward.
And for the people finding it strange it all happens way to fast (from Friday night to Monday morning) have you ever heard of love at first sight?Have you ever experienced it?This movie reminded me of how it felt especially the first time. It reminded me of my first love and our first kiss. Our first fight and how i left the girls house but waited at her door and couldn't decide if i should knock again and tell her sorry or if she was doing the same thing waiting for me to come back and looking at her phone waiting for my call. The feeling of tragedy when you are young and something happens and you think you lost the other person forever exaggerating. All this nostalgia that brings back memories of youth and innocence .
Finally i have to say that i liked Dylan O'Brien's performance as he retains this half-romantic,half-awkward and indecisive character that you would expect by someone as inexperienced. However the highlight for me was Britt Robertson's performance. All these facial expressions, the way she talked - sometimes barely whispering- her gestures , her insecurity and sensitivity made the difference to create a real character you can relate to. And of course her stunningly beautiful face made it even better.
Last but not least i should mention that most of the songs used seem appropriate for the exact moment conveying the feelings the protagonists have.
I highly recommend this movie if of course you like romantic films and want a touch of nostalgia and to remember your youth.

This was a passably interesting take on the high school movie. The characters felt real and had at least some depth, other than Dave's friends who felt shoehorned in for non-existent comedy. I thought the 'token black guy' was the thing of the past, but here he is again in a mostly silent, vaguely racist role as the friend and straight talking foil of the sensitive dreamy white kid. The 'English' friend was very awkward too, the accent was way off and the actor wooden.
Other than that, there wasn't anything offensive about the film. The dialogue was fairly smart and snappy, the acting was passable, the storyline was at least somewhat different.
I can't see anyone being passionate about the film, though, and that is the problem. Everything is just average, from the cinematography to the pacing to the plot. The attempts at being 'deep' and 'meaningful' such as the car wreck and the pretentious conversation felt shoehorned in. Essentially it is just a concise teen film that doesn't insult your intelligence but doesn't enthrall you either. There really isn't much to say about it.

Boring
It's all been seen before. The high school drama, parties etc. C'mon, let's get a little more creative here.
This movie was kind of boring. I didn't feel any romantic connections here. It felt very played out. It's watchable to an extent. But didn't hold my attention.
Would skip it, or watch it if you want.

A Cute Teen Comedy That Isn't Overly Cliché
Dave (Dylan O'Brien) is a high school senior that is infatuated with a girl named Jane (Victoria Justice). As he practices a speech to let her know how much he likes her in an alley during a party he meets Aubrey (Britt Robertson). Dave and her start to talk and get to know each other on a walk home. This sparks a relationship that begins during this first weekend for their meeting. The only thing is that Dave still has feelings for Jane and Aubrey currently has a boyfriend. Throughout the weekend they both go back and forth with each other trying to figure out their feelings. As well as when their "first time" will be and with who.
There's been many teen comedies over the years that have had pretty much the same subject matter. This one though is a type that I don't think I've seen in quite some time. It had the inner workings to be a raunchy teen comedy but instead it came across very cutesy even despite the main subject matter. It's not a bad thing. In fact it's refreshing. Nowadays all you see is R rated comedies that like to push the envelope and this film I feel gives a fairly honest (and sometimes hilarious) look at the complicated life of a teenager was done in a way that doesn't seem overly cliché. O'Brien did extremely well. His character Dave wasn't exactly a nerd but more of a dork and you can't help but root for him every step of the way. His hopeless romantic personality is the polar opposite of Aubrey and provides some really humorous and really sweet moments. Robertson brought forth a lot of maturity to her character and I absolutely loved it. Her character could easily own a conversation then turn right around and throw out a look as if she has no idea what she's talking about. It was scenes like that, that I found myself laughing at. If you're a girl I think you're definitely going to love it. If you're a guy I think you're going to like it a lot more than you expect. I literally sat there watching the movie with a smile on my face (or laughing) most of the time. A definite must watch!

..you take a chance, and get unexpectedly rewarded
.. if this kid were just a few inches taller, she would be the reigning youthful queen of Hollywood and the fashion world. There's numerous scenes in this cute, simple little movie, when the camera appears as if it's a foot from her face, that you look at her and see all the glamour images of many of the captivating women of generations before. From the first production you remember seeing her, you've realized she would be a force to be reckoned with. The film is the typical example of the genre, but it's a given she will make any of its' ilk more worthwhile. And these two should most definitely pair up again.. they are unquestionably a screen 'couple' that's to be remembered.

Great depiction of being caught in the throes of first love
1/15/18. A great teen romance movie that captures the angst of first love. Even more alluring is the couple, O'Brien and Robertson, had the chemistry to make their initial attempt to be the first for each other believable. A teen flick with a lot of heart that is worth catching.
